♥ Studying at SPD
posted by yukiong on Friday, 17 December 2010 at 4:02 pm.
On October, I started to study on a web design course in Society for Physically Disabilities (SPD). It was an unintentional decision. It was because the interviewer encouraged me to further on my studies when I went for the interview. My intention was to find a job which would allow me to earn more money. I have never thought of furthering my studies because I simply have no interest in studying any courses other than accounting course. Most importantly, it does not guarantee that I would be given a job. In the end, I may end up paying up the bank loan and may not get a good job.

On the other hand, I think that it might be a good time to spend since I could not get a proper job and you cannot expect me to stay at home all the time, wasting my time. To be frank, I have one plan which is to set up an online business in future. But I have no idea on where to go about like what stuff I am going to sell and those financial stuffs and I don’t know if it is realistic goal for me.

The social worker told me that the course would be completed within 6 to 9 months. But I think I would probably need 5 months to complete. It is because I have learnt most of the modules in polytechnic already. And I now need to re-learn as I have forgotten some of the stuff. At the same time, I want to learn more in depth and can learn from teacher whenever I encounter problems. There are also some software I did not learn before, like Photoshop and using other CMS like ‘Joomla’. Unlike in polytechnic, the facilitator did not teach much as it is a problem-based learning. That is why I did not have confidence to build a website on my own in the past even though I really wanted to create my own website.

At the same time, I can make many new friends like me. In the past, I only thought that there are not many people with disabilities in Singapore. Maybe it was because I seldom saw them hanging around the street and I have never associated with them before. After I came here, I can see many people with different kinds of disabilities. In here, there are many courses for these people to take and they are trying very hard to learn. Of course, it would depend on their individual’s ability and interest and they will be allocated to the suitable course. There are also some devices made specifically for them to use depending on the type of the disabilities they have. I feel that I am a lot fortunate than them and I must not keep moaning all the time and have any negative thoughts.

Now I have studied the course for about 2 ½ months already and it gives me more confidence to pursue my goals and hopefully, I would be able to create the first website by next year.
